As a birthday treat for my dad, my sister, treated the family for a lunch date at Bawai's in Tagaytay.

It's a Vietnamese restaurant that is managed and owned by a Vietnamese-Filipino family, residing here in the Philippines. The matriarch is a pure Vietnamese woman (Ba Wai - meaning: grandmother) who migrated here in the Philippines in the early 70's

This is not a typical restaurant because is it situated purely in their home in Tagaytay. A house that is converted into a restaurant. The head chef is none other than grandma herself ^_^

Bawai's strictly by reservations only. So if you plan to visit them--you better call them first and schedule. Their contact information will be available at the bottom/end of this blog entry.

We ordered:

Fresh Spring Rolls (Goi Cuon)
Vegetable Salad (Goi Thit Tom)
Shrimp Skewers (Chao Tom)
Pork Ribs (Com Tambi suon cha)
Shrimp (Tom Nang Me)
Soup #1 (Bung Bo Hue)
Soup#2 (Pho Bo)

The food was served quite fast, so, that is a plus factor. We were quite famished by the time we got there (due to the traffic at) plus, we did not eat much during breakfast.

The House Tea is Fantastic! Pandan Tea. Very Refreshing! ^_^ I love it!

Fresh Spring Rolls (Goi Cuon)

This dish is perfect for people with a strict diet. It's mainly shrimp, pork, vegetables and rice. It has a mild and fresh taste with a hint of basil. Very Healthy! It was served with their special Fish sauce that also tasted great. You can even use it with the other dish. ^_^

Price: Php 175 per order

Vegetable Salad (Goi Thit Tom)

This one is not your typical vegetable salad. It has bits of pork, herbs, plus they use their special sauce for the dressing. Almost similar to vinaigrette but with a touch of Bawai.

Price: Php 250

Shrimp Skewers (Chao Tom)

For me, it tasted fine. The texture is like eating squid balls. The serving is quite small for its price. As you can see, the presentation was nice -- they use sugar cane as skewers! We added a bit of fish sauce to add taste.

Price: Php 250 per order

Pork Ribs (Com Tambi suon cha)

Grilled Spareribs with egg omelet served with rice. The pork has a mild sweet taste, with a hint of barbecue flavor. It was cooked just right. The omelet doesn't really have much taste.  We also preferred adding a bit of their special fish sauce (from the Goi Cuon)

Price: Php 290 per order

Shrimp (Tom Nang Me)

This one is good. The shrimp tasted like it was cooked in Tamarind Sauce. It has a mild taste and the shrimp was cooked perfectly.

Price: Php 395 per order

Soup #1 (Bung Bo Hue)
Price: Php 235 per order

Soup#2 (Pho Bo)
Price: Php 225

Both soup was served with rice noodles and vegetables. Both were flavored with beef and/or pork. It's was less spicy, as requested. The soup reminded us of the one's in Pho Hoa.

For dessert we ordered their own version of sapin-sapin.

Banh da Lon

A combination of Monggo beans, coconut milk/cream and Pandan Flavor.
The other one used banana as a key ingredient.

Both are like a combination of pudding and tapioca with a chewy factor.

Both had a mild sweetness which makes it ideal for people with diabetes..i guess.. ^_^

They offer very good service! Their staff are also very welcoming and friendly. They smile ^_^ The cozy ambiance is fantastic!
